Whether doing exercises with the swimming noodle, aerobics or kickboxing in the pool: Aqua Fitness offers something for everyone. The training is versatile and takes advantage of the benefits of water. For certain people, the sport in the water is especially worthwhile.
As a rule, aqua fitness takes place in chest-high or deep water. “It depends on the type of training on the one hand, but also on the swimming abilities of the participants,” says Professor Dr. med. Ingo Froböse of the German Sport University in Cologne. “Anyone who does not feel safe in the deep water should pay attention to choosing a course that takes place in the shallower pelvis.”
Training for the whole body
Aqua training takes advantage of the benefits of water. “Since the resistance of the water is about 14 times higher than the air resistance, the movement is much more difficult, and the entire body is claimed,” explains Froböse. Therefore, even the gymnastics requires a little stamina and can be very exhausting. But the effort is worthwhile: torso and upper body muscles benefit particularly well, but also the legs are required. It also improves stamina, strength, coordination and agility.
Higher calorie consumption in the water
Sport in the water uses the phenomenon that the body in a pool is lighter. In addition to the stressed muscles, heat loss in the water also boosts calorie consumption. Thus, the body consumes about 400 kilocalories (Kcal) per half hour in the water because it increases its metabolism so as not to cool down. For comparison: During moderate jogging, there are only about 300 in the same time.
Water gymnastics protects the joints
Because the joints are relieved in the water, Aqua-Fitness is ideal for people with joint problems and obesity. However, people with heart problems should be careful and consult with the doctor, advises Froböse. In addition, you should not operate with open wounds or skin diseases Aqua-Sport.
